English database of Taiwan companies in China released

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- China Credit Information Service Ltd. (CCIS) released an English version of its book “Top 1,000 Taiwanese Corporations in China” yesterday, which the publisher said would facilitate both local and international investors on the other side of the Taiwan strait.

The book is co-published by the Commercial Times and is sponsored by HSBC.

The book, the second edition of its English version, is a compilation of the top 1,000 Taiwanese companies that are currently investing in China, providing information such as the companies’ products, sales, assets and net income. Desribing this database as comparable to a Yellow Pages for companies, Kao kung-lien, vice director of the Straits Exchange Foundation, continued that this book will facilitate future business endeavors across the the strait.

Kao further delineated the reason for an English version of this book. He described the close cultural and historical ties between China and Taiwan, which has greatly benefited Taiwanese investment on the mainland such that Western investors, through this book, may potentially learn to cooperate with Taiwanese companies in joint ventures.

This publication will also help the world’s understanding of the economic developments in China and the strong role Taiwan plays as the Taiwanese and Chinese markets are heavily intertwined. Kao concluded that this database will hopefully “aid foreign businesses enter the competitive Chinese market with greater ease.”

Alistair Currie, President and Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Taiwan, further emphasized the importance of such a database. He said that while entering the Chinese market is extremely challenging, it is a necessary process; with the growth of the Chinese economy, China has become not only the world’s factory, but also its marketplace. This publication, according to Currie, will therefore help facilitate Taiwanese investors in China. He stated that this book reflects HSBC’s belief that “servicing the needs of the Taiwanese in China is a priority.”

Cheng Ko-chia, HSBC Head of Commercial Banking of Greater China, adviced Taiwanese companies in China: given that China passed its new law of employment contracts and lowered the export tax refund rate from 13 percent to 5 percent, Taiwanese companies should stay in its core business, reduce capital spendings and sell unnecessary assets this year to save more money.

The publishers of the “Top 1,000 Taiwanese Corporations in Taiwan” concluded by expressing their hope that their book will be easily accessible at any library or hotel, so that any businessman, local or foreign, will be able to review its information. They will also consider donating some books to schools with strong academic emphasis on international business.
