Samsung unveils new mp3 player

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Samsung unveiled its new U4 mp3 player yesterday during a press conference in Taipei.

The U4 showcases a host of new and improved features from Samsung’s previous model in the line, the U3. The most notable of these new editions is its USB component, which allows for a direct connection to a user’s computer. The mp3 player can act as both a flash drive for data storage as well as a traditional mp3 player.

The U4 comes in two versions, a two gigabytes and a four gigabytes version and is available in three stylish colors — ruby red, ocean blue, and navy purple. It also utilizes LED technology for its screen’s.

The U4 is unique in its use of the patented Digital Natural Sound (DNSe), an audio component which, according to Samsung representatives, will provide clear and crisp sounds similar to those experienced at a live performance.

Besides its mp3 and data storage capabilities, the U4 lets the user listen to FM radio stations and even record short audio clips. The device is compatible with mp3, wma and ogg storage formats, and comes with nine pre-set EQ levels coupled with seven open EQ levels for the user to set. It also boasts 18+ hours of battery life with a charging time of three hours.

When asked how the new U4 will do in the competitive mp3 player market, specifically against Apple’s dominating iPod, Christina Lu, Assistant Manager of IT Product Marketing for Samsung Taiwan, said that the U4 differentiates itself from the iPod in its USB and data storage capabilities. She continued to say that the price of the U4 — NT$2,290 for the 2G and NT$2,990 for the 4G — is much cheaper than its Apple counterparts.

Flower Huang of Samsung Taiwan’s corporate marketing department said that the expectations for the U4 are high as its predecesor, the U3, was extremely well received in Taiwan, seen by the high number of units sold.
