Domain suffix '.taipei' set to launch this November

TAIPEI -- Taipei signed a registry agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Wednesday with the top-level domain suffix ".taipei" set to open for registration in November, according to Taipei's Department of Information Technology (DIT).

The agreement was signed in the capital by Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and ICANN board member Wu Kuo-wei.

Hau said the special phone line 1999 for Taipei residents and the public bike rental system YouBike will be among the first websites to adopt the ".taipei" suffix this year.

He said the suffix will then open for registration to all individuals and groups anywhere in the world.

Hau expressed hope that the development of Taipei as a "smart city" could be boosted and marketed through cloud and digital technology, including the ".taipei" domain suffix.

Wednesday's signing brings to 14 the number of cities to have secured the rights to their own top-level domains, according to Apple Daily.

Wu said that a city owning its own domain represents its freedom, progress and openness, according to local reports.
