TAIPEI--Acer (宏碁) Inc.'s board of directors on Thursday approved a plan to establish a Global Strategy Office in a bid to help turn around the fortunes of the struggling Taiwanese computer maker.
The office will be headed by Acer Chairman George Huang, who will assume the role of Corporate Chief Strategy Officer, focusing on new business investment opportunities for the company's long term sustainability, Acer said in an e-mailed statement.
In addition, Huang will oversee Acer's business strategies across the organization by building on its existing foundations of PC, tablet, smartphone and other hardware products connected within Acer's Build Your Own Cloud (BYOC) cloud ecosystem, the company said.
Acer's consolidated revenue fell in 2013 by an annual 16.2 percent to NT$360.13 billion (US$12 billion), and it posted a loss per share of NT$7.54.
The company attributed its weak performance to an intangible asset impairment loss of NT$9.94 billion, an inventory write-off of NT$3.18 billion and workforce reduction charges of NT$1.02 billion.
