Free economic zone bill is tabled without discussion

TAIPEI--A legislative committee meeting scheduled to review a draft law on the free economic pilot zone project was adjourned early Thursday without any substantive discussion on the bill.

Citing "an unfavorable atmosphere," Economics Committee co-chair Huang Chao-shun of the ruling Kuomintang adjourned the meeting based on a proposal by opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Ker Chien-ming at 9:40 a.m., less than 30 minutes after its opening.

The KMT had hoped that the committee could complete reviewing the bill during the current special legislative session, which runs through Aug. 8.

Huang, a veteran lawmaker from Kaohsiung, and her DPP colleague have said all government efforts should focus on the cleanup work and reconstruction in the southern city after it was rocked by chemical explosions last week.
