Blast relief donations exceed NT$1 billion

Donations from companies and individuals around Taiwan to help with disaster relief after the Kaohsiung gas explosions passed the NT$1 billion mark by yesterday afternoon, Kaohsiung's Social Affairs Bureau said.

The bureau counted around 9,000 donations to the specific account set up for the Kaohsiung disaster relief fund, with many large-sum donations coming from Taiwanese firms. Up to date, the largest single donation is still the NT$60 million pledged by the E United Group (義聯集團). The bureau said all the funds raised will be used for relief efforts and reconstruction of affected areas.

Donations are still pouring in. The Shanghai Commercial Bank (上海商業銀行) said on Sunday it will donate NT$10 million to the relief efforts. Electronics firm Tripod Technology (健鼎) pledged NT$8 million and hypermarket operator RT-Mart (大潤發) NT$6 million while tech firm Taiflex (台虹) donated NT$2 million yesterday.

Convenience store chain Family Mart said yesterday that it has received over NT$100 million in donations from over 60,000 individuals. The President of 7-Eleven said it will also allow people to donate to the cause via its e-commerce console.
