HTC 'desirability' drops in China according to survey

TAIPEI--HTC has become a less desirable brand for Chinese consumers, according a survey released Friday that asked customers what brand they would prefer for their next smartphone.

The poll, conducted by Avanti research firm, found that only 3 percent of respondents would choose a phone from Taiwanese maker HTC Corp.

Apple Inc.'s iPhone topped the list at 22 percent, closely followed by Samsung with 21 percent and hometown-brand Xiaomi with 15 percent.

HTC has seen a downward trend in the poll since early 2012, when it garnered 10 percent among other smartphone brands, according to the report.

"As growth in the overall smartphone market is cooling down, vendors are using low-priced units to gain market share while high-end units are no longer solely dominating," Avanti said.

In terms of pricing advantages, Chinese consumers put Xiaomi and Huawei, also a local brand, at the top, the research firm said.

Although iPhone and Samsung products are considered to have the best reliability and brand visibility, Chinese consumers were impressed with the user-friendliness of Xiaomi and Huawei handsets, it said.

The online survey was based on 3,000 valid samples collected nationwide April 11-22. Avanti did not provide a margin of error.

In contrast to China, consumer mentality in the United Kingdom tells a different story.

HTC was leading an ongoing poll conducted by the U.K.'s Mobile Choice magazine for most desirable smartphone brand, followed by world leader Samsung.
