Smartphone shipments likely to continue: firm

TAIPEI -- Worldwide smartphone shipments will continue growing in 2014, spurred on by the growing promotion of 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks, a local market information advisory firm said Friday.

A total of 1.2 billion smartphones are expected to be shipped this year, up 29 percent from a year ago, TrendForce said in a research note.

China's growing 4G Time Division LTE is particularly creating growth momentum for smartphone shipments and upgraded smartphone specifications, it said.

Other factors expected to boost shipments are the release of the new iPhone model later this year, economic recovery across the globe, and increased demand for entry-level and mid-range smartphones, the firm said.
