Proudly made in Taiwan, BeeBoard combines surfing and skateboarding

Holiway is the first self-owned sports brand in Taiwan and a must-know brand name for fans of skateboarding for its new creation: the skate-free BeeBoard.

The 60-centimeter, 2.14-kilogram BeeBoard is an upgrade to the concept of a three-wheeled skateboard, propelled and steered by a rider's swing and balance in a way that resembles surfing.

"It's easier to control and harder to fall off of than other skateboards," Herman Hsu, the founder of Taichung-based Holiway Creation Leisure Co., said at a sporting goods fair in March.

The 43-year-old inventor and fan of surfing and skateboarding believes the single pivoting front-wheel of the BeeBoard makes it smoother and safer than four-wheeled skateboards and two-wheeled wave boards.

"Beeboarding is just as much fun as surfing, but what's more important is that you don't need to worry about (finding) the waves!" he said enthusiastically.

Arranging the three wheels in the design of his product, which was first launched in Taiwan last October, was a big challenge. Hsu spent two and a half years in research and development, trying more than 50 different combinations before coming up with a "golden ratio" for the pivot and axle in 2009.

Choosing the right mixed materials for the board alone took him eight months, but the mixed plastic he ended up using is lighter and more flexible than the traditional maple used for skateboards. Hsu's company says it can withstand the impact of a person as heavy as 100 kg.

"I'd like to make it a popular sport in not only Taiwan but also the rest of the world," Hsu said.

Though only established in 2011, Holiway now has its products sold in the United States, France, Sweden, South Korea, Japan, Brunei, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand.
