Millions generated from Nigeria purchase meetings

TAIPEI -- A series of purchasing meetings held this week among 22 Taiwanese firms and 12 companies from Nigeria generated US$27.61 million in business, Taiwan's main trade promotion body said Tuesday.

Nigerian buyers focused on food, machinery, healthcare and medical products at the Monday trade meeting in Taipei, according to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

The half-day event aimed to forge closer economic ties between Taiwan and Nigeria, now one of the most important economies in Africa, TAITRA said in a statement.

Representatives from Yomgbola Concept Nigeria Ltd., a retailer in the West African country, made trial orders worth NT$300,000 (US$10,139) for refrigerators, televisions, stereos and motors during their first visit to Taiwan, the statement said.

Nigerian hospital operator Ace Medicare Clinics Ltd. also praised Taiwanese products, according to the TAITRA statement, and said that it hopes for closer cooperation with Taiwanese suppliers as a new hospital is expected to be completed next year.
