Taiwan aims to boost exports to S. Africa

TAIPEI -- Taiwan is aiming at boosting its exports to South Africa and to have a stronger presence there, the country's main trade promoting body said Saturday.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said in a statement that it is leading 16 companies to attend the annual Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) June 22-24 in Johannesburg.

"As Africa's largest trade show, SAITEX has become a great trade platform for South Africa and neighboring African countries since 1993," TAITRA said.

In 2013, the show attracted 980 companies from 50 countries, showcasing over 3,000 products ranging from machinery and electronics to commodities and food, it added.

The 16 Taiwanese exhibitors will man a national pavilion featuring crafts, accessories, sports gear, food, textiles and other products made or designed in Taiwan, according to TAITRA.

Africa is seen as an emerging market with great potential, and South Africa can serve as a springboard to that market, TAITRA said, adding that Taiwanese companies can use the country as a hub for exporting to neighboring nations such as Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya.
