Nearly half of German businesses upbeat about ROC economy: survey

TAIPEI -- Nearly half of German businesses in Taiwan are increasingly optimistic about Taiwan's economic recovery, according to the results of a survey released by the German Trade Office Taipei.

The survey, conducted among 248 German companies in Taiwan from May 12 to June 6 this year, indicated that 47 percent of the companies expect an improvement in Taiwan's economic environment in 2014, an increase from 35 percent in last year's survey and 24 percent in 2012.

The outlook for the German companies themselves is also positive, with 66 percent of them expecting to take in increasing revenues in 2014 and 40 percent expecting increasing profits.

Further, some 25 percent of the companies plan investments at new locations within the next two years.

For the first time, Taichung is listed in the survey as the most attractive investment location, while Hsinchu and Tainan show the largest growth in attractiveness compared to last year, according to the findings.

Additionally, about 50 percent of the German companies in Taiwan regard the trade-in-services agreement between Taiwan and China as important for their business.

Some 41 percent of the German companies stated that the agreement would have a positive impact on their future business development in Taiwan, with another 33 percent saying the agreement would also have a positive impact on their future investment decisions in Taiwan.
