Far EasTone looking to diversify into health care, content services

TAIPEI--Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. (遠傳), Taiwan's third largest mobile operator, said Wednesday that it plans to develop a new business to transform itself into a provider of diversified services.

The new business, scheduled to be launched in the second half of the year, will incorporate health management, mobile commerce and content services, Far EasTone President Yvonne Li (李彬) said at the company's annual shareholders' meeting.

She forecast that the new business could generate 6 percent of Far EasTone's annual consolidated revenue, or more than NT$5 billion (US$167 million) a year, within three years.

The operator also expects its market share of enterprise telecom services to increase from the current 15 percent to 20 percent by 2017, and aspires to become consumers' preferred telecom brand in Taiwan's telecom market, Li said.

Asked to comment on Far EasTone's interest in working with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (鴻海) on the 700 MHz spectrum for 4G mobile services, Far EasTone Chairman Douglas Hsu (徐旭東) said the idea would be "win-win" for the two companies because it would promote operational efficiency.
