Control Yuan defends role as nation's supervisory body

TAIPEI--A member of the Control Yuan expressed yesterday his opposition to scrapping the government supervisory body, though he indicated openness to discussions on possibly downgrading the branch of government.

"It is very unwise to abolish the powers of supervision," yuan member Frank Wu told a press conference. "But whether (that power) needs to exist as a yuan (branch of government) is up for discussion."

The Control Yuan, one of the five branches that makes up the Republic of China government, earlier issued a statement through Wu arguing that its continued existence is beneficial to Taiwan's national development.

The statement from Wu, a former journalist whose tenure at the Control Yuan expires July 31, and the press conference came amid discussion of whether the Control and Examination yuans should be abolished, an issue that has emerged as lawmakers head toward a special legislative session during which they will consider President Ma Ying-jeou's nominees for new members of the two branches.

In the statement, Wu defended his institution, saying that his experience as a Control Yuan member has allowed him to recognize the organization's role in protecting people against abuses of power through the use of measures such as censures and impeachment.
