Chunghwa launches Taiwan's first 4G service

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's leading telecommunication company Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信) announced its launch of the 4G broadband service yesterday, one month prior to market expectations, making it the first company to launch the 4G service in Taiwan.

Chunghwa Telecom held an “Experience 4G” press conference yesterday. It was attended by Chunghwa's ranking officers and its various partners, including HTC, Samsung and other distributors, network providers, media content providers, etc.

Starting today, consumers may apply to Chunghwa to upgrade to the 4G service. The company provides eight different data plans, ranging from NT$236 to NT$2,636 in price, in an effort to meet different demands. With the “3G upgrade to 4G” data plan, customers with 4G-compatible phones may upgrade to 4G with a monthly fee of NT$1,336. They only have to change SIM cards by the end of September without having to extend contracts or change phone numbers.

Other plans such as the fun plan, the easy fun plan, the student plan, the iPhone plan and the tablet plan also allow users to switch by the end of September without needing to pay extra monthly fees or extend contracts.

Four Value-added Services

In the age of digital convergence, there is a merger between data and media, Tsai said. Chunghwa Telecom is not just a telecommunications company; it provides many different services, Tsai said, adding that besides voice and high-speed internet, the company also provides high-speed media and other value-added services. Chunghwa will provide four major value-added services: high definition videos, high-quality music, a 3D navigation system and games in the cloud.

Chunghwa markets the expansion of services with the slogan “upgrade in speed, upgrade in broadband and upgrade in entertainment.”

Chunghwa is also introducing a number of mobile devices that are compatible with 4G LTE. More than 30 devices from name brands such as HTC, Samsung, Sony, Apple, ASUS, LG, Huawei, BenQ and Infocus are already on the market. Chunghwa plans to roll out more than 50 devices that are 4G-compatible by the third quarter, the company said.

4G the Most Important Mission of the Year

Chunghwa said it is the only company in Taiwan to own the 35MHz spectrum, and with the 4G service it can provide a 100Mbps download speed and a 30Mbps upload speed.

Chunghwa Telecom has invested billions into 4G LTE infrastructure development, said Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Rick Tsai (蔡力行), adding that it will continue its efforts to make mobile Internet service more universal for the general public.

Tsai said that yesterday was the most important day since he assumed his post as chairman and that the launch of 4G service is the most important mission for Chunghwa this year.

The company previously announced its goal to acquire 400,000 subscribers by the end of the year, obtaining a 40-percent market share.
