Taiwan 11th most expensive spot for expats in Asia-Pacific

TAIPEI--Taiwan is the 11th most expensive location in the Asia-Pacific region for expatriate salary packages, according to a survey by ECA International, a London-based human resources consulting firm.

ECA's latest MyExpatriate Market Pay Survey shows that companies that need to post middle managers to Taiwan provide overall packages worth US$233,000 per year on average.

This is lower than Tokyo — the most expensive Asian location — as well as Hong Kong, Singapore and some tier-one cities in China. But the figure for Taiwan is slightly higher than many tier-two Chinese cities, and almost on a par with expatriate packages in Vietnam, according to the findings.

"For companies looking to set up operations in the region, Taiwan offers a more cost-effective alternative to mainland China's major cities in terms of the costs to companies of attracting expatriate staff," said Lee Quane, ECA's regional director of Asia.

"While packages have increased in value in both locations over the past year, the rate of this has been faster, overall, in mainland China than in Taiwan," Quane said in the survey released May 21.

The average package for expatriate middle managers in Taiwan is ranked 11th in the Asia-Pacific region behind Japan, Australia, India, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea and Philippines, according to the ECA survey.

Japan, where both living costs and tax levels are high, remains home to Asia's highest expatriate packages. A salary package for an expatriate middle manager there is worth US$379,000 per year on average.

ECA's MyExpatriate Market Pay Survey looks at pay levels for expatriates around the world, including information on benefits, allowances, salary calculation methods and tax treatment.
