Large-sized panel shipments down in April on poor sales

TAIPEI--Global shipments of large-sized panels declined in April, dragged down by poor sales of the televisions, laptop computers and monitors in which they are used, a local flat screen research institute said Tuesday.
April shipments totaled 65.29 million units worldwide, down 2 percent from the previous month, said Taipei-based WitsView in a research note. It added, however, that the numbers are expected to rebound and grow by 5 percent in May due to strong demand for tablets.
Jeffy Chen, a research manager at WitsView, attributed the drop in April to sliding shipments of panels for TVs — a huge chunk of the total large-sized panel shipments — which slumped 2.3 percent month-on-month to 20.51 million units.
Panels for laptop computers also slid 3.2 percent to 15.37 million units, while those for monitors dropped 5.1 percent to 13.29 million units, the report showed.
Month-on-month growth of 2.8 percent in tablet panels over the month failed to offset that impact, Chen said, although tablets are expected to continue driving total shipments in May.
Tablet panel shipments could reach 15-20 percent growth this month due to new model launches from white-box manufacturers and major brands, according to Chen.
TV panel shipments are likely to stay on par with April or decline slightly, while shipments for monitor and laptop panels are forecast to grow 1-2 percent, he said.
