Global LCD monitor shipments rise in March

TAIPEI--Worldwide shipments of liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors rose in March, mainly due to a lower base period in February, according to a Taipei-based market information advisory firm.

Despite the lower base period, global March shipments were "stronger than expected," with shipments by brands and makers surging by 20.6 percent and 32.1 percent, respectively, WitsView research manager Anita Wang said on Thursday.

The end of support for the long-lived W indows XP operating system resulted in an increase in sales in the North American enterprise market, while many makers in the Chinese market prepared in advance for inventories as they were cautious about the tight supply in the region, Wang said in a research note.

The sales of low-priced models also drove the market in the Asia-Pacific region, she added.

Shipments during the first three months of the year were better than expected and the momentum is expected to continue through the second quarter, Wang predicted.

However, the shipment volume is still constrained due to the tight supply of LCD monitor panels and the weak consumer market, she cautioned.
