TAIPEI--Taiwanese smartphone vendor HTC Corp. (宏達電) has received pre-orders online from customers in China for more than one million units of its new flagship HTC One M8 smartphone, according to website statistics.

Since March 26, when HTC launched a pre-order campaign with two of China's top telecom companies, Chinese buyers have placed about 1.15 million orders for the new smartphone, statistics from Chinese shopping sites showed Thursday.

On, the HTC One M8 is listed at a price of 5,299 Chinese yuan (US$855). The smartphone comes with a 5-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.3GHz processor, on-screen buttons, a twin-sensor camera with dual-LED flash, dual speakers at the front and HTC's Sense 6.0 user interface.

HTC's newest flagship model was launched in London and New York on March 25, in tandem with an advertising campaign featuring American actor Robert Downey Jr., the star of the Iron Man movie series.

HTC is working with China Mobile and China Unicom in the Chinese market, as well as with more than 230 telecom services providers and distributors worldwide to promote the HTC One M8.

Having broadened its distribution from 185 partners in 2013, HTC may boost the global visibility of its new flagship phone and eventually increase shipments, according to market analysts.

The company is also expected to benefit from the launch of some mid-range models, in particular the HTC Desire 816, which could raise HTC sales in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, HTC posted NT$33.12 billion in consolidated sales, down 22.8 percent from NT$42.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013 and short of its NT$34 billion to NT$36 billion target.
