Taiwan's tourism forecast to continue growth in '14

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's tourism industry is expected to maintain growth momentum through 2014 as key market indicators are likely to continue moving up, the Tourism Bureau said, citing a report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

WTTC, a forum for leaders of the world's 100 top travel companies, said in its March report that Taiwan could see its tourism-driven gross domestic product (GDP) grow by 3.6 percent this year.

Employment in the sector looks poised to grow 5.7 percent over 2014, while investments could grow by 8 percent, the report showed.

Last year, the tourism industry brought in US$25.8 billion, or 5.3 percent of Taiwan's overall GDP for the year, WTTC said.

It employed 643,000 people, or 5.9 percent of Taiwan's working population, and attracted investments totaling US$5.46 billion, 5.8 percent of total investments in the country, the figures showed.
