Taipei planning 2 industrial parks to boost design industry

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei city government is planning to establish two industrial parks to boost the municipality's design industry, according to the commissioner of the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs.

The parks are both scheduled to be built in the Zhongshan District, with one to be located in Dazhi and the other at the current URS21 Chung Shan Creative Hub, Liu Wei gong said Wednesday at a press meeting to unveil 16 projects his department plans to push following Taipei's designation as the 2016 World Design Capital (WDC).

The park in Dazhi will focus on the fashion design industry, while the other will stress architecture and city development, and provide space for entrepreneurs to build their own brands, according to the department.

"I hope Taipei can truly become a creative hub in Asia by 2016," Liu said.

In addition to building the parks, Taipei also plans to increase the number of its creative clusters from 13 to 16 by 2016, Liu said.

It will also allocate NT$20 million (US$654,852) each year to subsidize mostly social design projects aimed at improving the city's infrastructure and the lives of residents, he added.

Other projects include a park that will provide health services and information for the elderly, redesigning overpasses and underpasses, reusing old houses and making shop signs more creative.

The department estimates that total revenues for design-related industries in Taiwan could reach NT$140.6 billion by 2016, more than double the current figure.
