Consumer confidence index takes hit in March as 2-month streak ends

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- National Central University (NCU, 中央大學) yesterday published the latest update to the consumer confidence index (CCI) for March, which at 80.96 points saw a 1.97-point decline from the previous month, marking the end of a two-month rising streak.

Six other indicators included in the study also saw across-the-board declines, consisting of intermediate sentiments in the next six-months period on prospects of employment opportunities, the procurement of durable goods and assets, outlook on the economic conditions of the nation and individual households, the cost of consumer goods and market investments. Of these, the outlook on equities investments saw the most pronounced decline, tumbling by 5 points to 78.4 points, followed by sentiments on domestic employment opportunities and economic conditions, which declined by 2.25 points and 2.05 points respectively.

According to the Research Center for Taiwan Economic Development, NCU, despite the declines recorded over March, sentiments on employment opportunities and durable goods procurement prospects remain optimistic, while the remaining four sentiments are more pessimistic.

The study was conducted by the NCU and Fu Jen Catholic University (輔仁大學) in conjunction with the Taiwan Research Institute (台灣綜合研究院), and consisted of randomly selected telephone interviews of subjects aged 20 and up throughout Taiwan from Mar. 19 to 23.
