Lai's victory in election ends ROCCOC's debacle

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Shining Group (鄉林集團) Chairman Lai Cheng-I (賴正鎰) on Friday won the special election for the chairmanship of the General Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of China (ROCCOC), settling months of dispute within the major business association in Taiwan.

The ROCCOC yesterday staged a special election for its chairmanship and board of directors. As expected, Lai won a landslide victory, snapping up 416 votes in the election, while Yeh Tsong-I (葉宗義) stood out as the convener for the board of directors.

After the election was over, Lai told local media that both elections were fair and just, saying he is convinced that the internal dispute in the ROCCOC will be over soon since the special election meets the Ministry of the Interior's standards of fairness and transparency.

Lai yesterday invited Chang Pen-tso (張平沼), the former chairman of the ROCCOC, to assume the role of ROCCOC honorary chairman in order to lessen the internal conflict.

The other "fair and just" election Lai mentioned yesterday refers to a ballot held last year during the ROCCOC's routine election for the chamber's ninth assembly. Traditionally, elections of this kind fill 45 seats on the board of directors and 17 seats on the board of supervisors.

However, disputes arose since procedures were changed at the last minute, with members voting for 51 seats on the board of directors and 17 seats on the board of supervisors. There were rumors that Lai angled for the chairmanship by facilitating changes in election procedures.
