TV panel price quotes level out after decline

TAIPEI--Price quotes for TV screens for the second half of March largely leveled out from a recent decline as suppliers have been unable to meet demand from regional TV manufacturers, a research report said Thursday.

Market information advisory firm DisplaySearch said that TV panel supply has failed to meet demand from Chinese, South Korean and Japanese TV makers, particularly for screen sizes of 32, 40 and 42 inches.

The tight supply is expected to continue over the next few months, likely meaning good news for panel makers.

Global flat panel demand is expected to grow 7 percent this year, outpacing the expected 4 percent rise in production capacity.

Quotes for 32-inch screens were similar to those from the first half of the month at US$76. Prices for larger screens remained little changed, as well, with 39-inch panels coming out to US$115, 40-42 inch panels at US$131, and 46-inch panels at US$178, DisplaySearch said.

Price quotes for 50-inch panels, however, continued to decline from the first half of the month, falling US$2 to US$202, the company said.

Market analysts said an anticipated buying spree ahead of and during China's Labor Day holiday May 1-3 has left demand for screens on the rise as TV makers ramp up production.

The DisplaySearch report said that prices of desktop and laptop panels quoted for the second half of March also generally remained stable.

In a similarly upbeat report earlier this week, research group WitsView said large-sized screen shipments are expected to grow 8 percent month-on-month in March after seeing a 4 percent decline in February.

WitsView said shipments of panels in the industry are likely to grow 13 percent this month, while shipments of desktop computer screens and notebook computer panels could grow 12 percent and 6 percent, respectively.
