Summit reveals Israel seeking economic ties with Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Israel's representative office in Taiwan held a seminar Thursday on investment opportunities in Israel that was attended by representatives from Taiwanese and Israeli companies, in an effort to boost economic ties between the two countries.

The seminar in Taipei, titled "Israel — Venturing toward Innovation," was the start of a long-term partnership between Israel and Taiwan, said Doron Hemo, head of the Economic and Trade Mission at the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei.

A total of eight Israeli investment companies traveled to Taiwan to attend the one-day seminar on investment in innovation, giving introductory briefings while seeking cooperation with their Taiwanese counterparts.

Representatives of Taiwanese companies that have invested in Israel also shared their experiences at the seminar, which was attended by 130 representatives from around 100 Taiwanese baking, venture capital firms and information and communications companies.

Szu Kuo-i, vice executive president of Taichung-based Hiwin Technologies Corp. (上銀科技), said the investment in Israel helped the machinery company to upgrade its business and expand its global market target.

The investment in the Israeli city of Haifa has given the company the opportunity to learn from other foreign high-tech companies with presences in the Middle Eastern country, he said.

During the seminar, Hemo also gave a presentation to introduce the investment environment in Israel and incentives for foreign investors, such as tax benefits.

Later in the day, one-on-one meetings were scheduled to take place so that the Taiwanese participants could meet with those from the eight Israeli companies to explore opportunities for mutual cooperation.
