Asia Optical expects to see 30-percent growth in 2014

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Thanks to increased orders from Kodak, Asia Optical (亞洲光學) is poised to see 30-percent growth in consolidated revenue, taking in NT$22.5 billion this year, institutional investors estimated.

Asia Optical held an annual banquet on Sunday, where about 150 dining tables were prepared to serve attendants.

Asia Optical Chairman Robert Lai (賴以仁) expressed an optimistic outlook about the company's performance this year, saying that Long Zoom DSC, Mirrorless S-1, Sports Camera SP-1, SP360 (Action Camera) and Smart Lens are expected to drive the company's growth this year. The company's products that utilize cloud technology can be controlled with Wi-Fi.

Kodak's camera-related orders in 2014 amounted to 2.5 million units, and are estimated to contribute NT$7.5 billion worth of revenues, Lai said.

Shipments of smartphone lenses are expected to begin in March, and the company estimates a shipment of 500,000 units in total this year. Shipments of SP360 will begin in May, and the company estimates a shipment of 300,000 units this year.

SP360 can produce 16 megapixel pictures in still mode, and 10.8 megapixel pictures in motion mode. The product can be applied for use in monitors, as event data recorders on vehicles, video conference equipment and sports video recorders. The functionality of SP360, which provides a 360-degree view, is as good as three to four monitors combined, said the company.

Asia Optical's products are also used in vehicles, with lenses utilized in BMW and Mercedes Benz relying on the company's supply. Asia Optical's shipment totaled 150,000 units per month.

The company plans to make further investments in Myanmar, up to NT$600 to NT$700 million this year. The company currently employs 6,000 people in Myanmar, and the number is set to increase to 10,000 this year, turning Myanmar into the company's second-largest manufacturer and contributing NT$5 billion in output value, which is one fourth of the total. Facilities in Myanmar are expected to contribute half of output value by 2016. The company also owns two factories in mainland China, which employ about 10,000 people.
