LCD monitor shipments forecast to continue to decline this year

TAIPEI--The global trend of declining liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor shipments will continue in 2014, amid more conservative marketing and reduced production capacity, according to a local market research firm.

Shipments of LCD monitors, including all-in-one computers (AIOs), will drop by an annual 5.1 percent to 150 million units in 2014, WitsView said in a research note, noting that total shipments fell 5 percent annually to 158 million units in 2013.

WitsView said shipments of AIOs will increase by an annual 6.7 percent in 2014 to 16 million units, but other types of LCD monitors will decline 6.3 percent to around 134 million units.

The 6.3-percent drop will be due mainly to conservative marketing by major brands and a constrained LCD monitor panel supply as manufacturers reduce production capacity, said WitsView Assistant Research Manager Anita Wang.

"The conventional monitor segment is declining steadily due to the erosion of smart mobile devices," Wang said, adding that more manufacturers are starting to develop niche products such as AIOs.

The smart LCD monitor, equipped with the Android operating system, is "more marketable" despite its cost, which is twice to that of a regular LCD monitor, Wang said.
