More of the nation's ICT firms confident over prospects of Q1

TAIPEI--More information and communication technology (ICT) firms in Taiwan have an overall optimistic outlook for the first quarter of this year, compared to the previous quarter, according to the results of a survey released yesterday.

The Taipei Computer Association study found that 39 percent of the polled companies expressed optimism over the first three months of the year, a rise of 7 percentage points from the last quarter of 2013, while 37 percent held a rather pessimistic view, up 1 percentage point from the previous one.

The average business climate index for January to March increased to 1.5 from 1.46 registered in the previous quarter, the association said. Any figure under 1.5 indicates a negative outlook on the economy.

The increase marked the first upward turn after two consecutive decreases since the second quarter of 2013, when the index peaked at 1.77.

The survey was conducted Dec. 6-17, 2013 among 1,074 local suppliers signing up for Computex Taipei 2014 and it was based on 314 valid responses received.

Computex, the world's second-largest computer trade show, which highlighted the latest technology relating to tablets, cloud computing, smartphones and intelligent televisions, is scheduled to take place June 3-7.
