Siew will be the honorary leader of the 16-strong delegation of the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce (CNAIC), a private, independent and non-profit organization of leading commercial and industrial groups, financial institutions, business associations, industrialists and businessmen in Taiwan. CNAIC Chairman Kenneth Lo will head the delegation.
It will be the highest-level delegation CNAIC has ever organized for a trade-promotion tour to Europe, according to CNAIC. The delegation members will include CNAIC Vice Chairman Nelsen Chang, Panasonic Taiwan Chairman Hung Ming-hung, Taishin Financial Holding Chairman Thomas Wu and Franz Porcelain CEO Francis Chen.
The European Union is Taiwan's fourth-largest trade partner and its largest source of foreign investment, CNAIC said in a statement.
The planned visit to three EU member-states — Germany, France and Belgium — is aimed at studying Europe's current economic state in the wake of the national debt crisis there and promoting Taiwan-Europe industrial and commercial cooperation, the statement said.
During the one-week tour, CNAIC will also try to push for closer bilateral investment and trade links through interaction with its EU counterpart as part of efforts to promote an economic cooperation agreement with the EU, the business organization said.
The delegation will visit BusinessEurope, the Taiwan Committee of German Economy, Germany's Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Movement of the Enterprises of France before returning home Sept. 28.
