Rent near top private colleges rises on back of new legislation

The rents near some of Taiwan's top private universities have become more expensive after a new measure requiring landlords leasing their properties through brokerage firms to report the rents they charge.

According to real estate portal Housing Fun, rents near prestigious universities have increased by about NT$200 to NT$400 per month, heaping pressure on college students who are financially constrained.

According to Housing Fun, landlords fear they will be subject to higher income tax once reporting their rents. As a result they transfer the tax burden onto students.
