Local developer unveils integrated Web platform for disaster prevention

TAIPEI -- Taiwan has developed an online platform that integrates real-time data and historical disaster information and can help central and local governments make better decisions and respond more promptly to future disasters, its developers said yesterday.

Using cloud computing services, the decision support system currently combines nearly 120 different large data sets from various surveillance centers nationwide under more than 20 different agencies, according to the National Applied Research Laboratories, which initiated the project in 2010.

"It serves well as a decision-making assistant," said Chen Liang-gee, president of the state-run laboratories. "We'd like to use technology to safeguard people's lives."

By integrating the information, the platform allows decision makers to deal with contingencies more swiftly, Chen said.
