MStar reports record sales in 2010

TAIPEI--MStar Semiconductor Inc., a Taiwan-based fabless integrated circuit (IC) designer, reported US$1.067 billion in revenue for 2010 yesterday, the first time it has broken the US$1 billion revenue mark.

The record-breaking performance fell within investors' expectations. MStar made NT$33.663 billion in sales for last year, up 21.48 percent from a year earlier.

This translates into an earnings per share of NT$9.3 last year, according to a forecast by institutional investors.

In December alone, however, the company saw a worse-than-expected annual increase of 17.29 percent to reach NT$2.236 billion in sales, which brought its fourth-quarter revenue to NT$8.196 billion, up 11.11 percent year-on-year.

The traditional low season prompted the December sales to fall from a monthly average of NT$2.98 billion recorded in October and November.

For this year, institutional investors expressed confidence that MStar will expand its TV chip sales by 10 percent.

MStar is also likely to occupy a 7-percent share of the mobile phone chip market in China, which would make a 10-percent contribution to total sales, the investors added.

MStar is forecast to rake in revenue of nearly NT$40 billion for 2011, representing an annual rise of some 20 percent, they said.
