Trade between Laos and China increases 59.3% to US$566 million

VIENTIANE, Laos -- Bilateral trade between Laos and China reached US$566 million in the first half of 2010, a jump of 59.3 percent, state media reports said Tuesday.

The surge in trade was attributed to the establishment of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area, a free trade agreement between the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China that came into full effect on Jan. 1.

The growth of trade between China and Laos was higher than the 54.7-percent average increase in trade between China and ASEAN countries, according to Chinese customs statistics made available to The Vientiane Times.

Laos' exports in the first half of 2010 amounted to US$284 million, a 55.6-percent increase, while imports from China to Laos were worth US$283 million, a rise of 63.2 percent.

Major exports from Laos to China include minerals, furniture, agricultural products and handicrafts, while the main goods imported to Laos from China are electrical equipment, construction materials, electricity, automobile accessories and commodities.
