Local brand Vizio sitting pretty after taking lead in North America's 60-inch TV market

The head of Taiwan electronics brand Vizio yesterday expressed satisfaction that the company is now the leader in the market for 60-inch TVs in North America.
The 60-inch Vizio E601i, a joint collaboration effort between Vizio and Hon Hai, was sold in North America for US$688 and enjoyed instant success, said Wang Wei, chairman of Vizio, during an interview with the United Evening News.
“The E 601i sold over 100,000 units during the Thanksgiving Day period,” Wang said. “In total, we sold over 300,000 TVs during the holiday break.”
According to a poll by market research firm NPD, Vizio had a 37.5-percent share in the 55-inch market, followed by 37.1 percent for Samsung, during the Thanksgiving Day period. The two were followed by Sharp, Sony and LG.
Also according to the NPD poll, 93,614 TVs 60 inches and larger were sold during Thanksgiving last year, or about 4 percent of the market. This year, 60-inch TVs offered by the five major brands sold 208,923, a rise of 123 percent compared to the same period last year.
During the Thanksgiving break, Vizio sold 124,000 60-inch TVs, including the 100,000 under the E 601i model. The figure translates into a share of 59.4 percent in the 60-inch TV market, the highest in the category compared to the 22 percent for Sharp and 16.6 percent for Samsung, NPD said.
“We expect the E 601i TV to sell 200,000 by the year-end,” Wang said.
