Trademark applications tumble 16% during economic crisis: WIPO

GENEVA -- Demand for international trademark protection plunged during the global economic crisis, with new filings dropping some 16 percent in 2009, the U.N. intellectual property protection agency said Thursday. Some 35,195 applications for trademarks were received in 2009, compared to 42,075 in 2008, the biggest fall recorded, said Francis Gurry, who heads the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

“Intellectual trademark filings took a hit in 2009,” Gurry said. However, filings from some countries continued to grow, such as Japan, up 2.7 percent, Singapore, up by a fifth and South Korea, up by a third.
