Brazil's Petrobras makes big natural gas find: Peru

LIMA -- President Alan Garcia says Brazil's state-run Petrobras has found at least 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in Peru's jungle, enough to ensure the Andean country's gas supply through 2050. But Garcia says final confirmation of the find is still pending.

Nobody at Petrobras' offices in Lima was available to confirm the find on Thursday.

Garcia says state oil officials estimate there are up to 5 trillion cubic feet of gas in Petrobras' Lot 58 in central Cuzco province.

The block is adjacent to the Camisea natural gas fields and pipeline, operated by an international consortium headed by Argentina's Pluspetrol SA.

Peru has opened 75 percent of its Amazon jungle to exploration.
