Mexico’s Telmex launches Web-based newscast

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico’s telephone giant, Telmex, has launched a Web-based newscast while it awaits permission from regulatory authorities to enter the country’s television market.

The company has set up UNO TV on the Web site of Telmex’s Prodigy Media, where it offers a brief news stream twice a day, Monday through Friday.

A Telmex spokeswoman insists UNO TV is an Internet product and the company is not trying to sidestep regulations on television. She spoke Wednesday and was not authorized to give her name.

Telmex is asking officials for permission to offer television services using “triple-play,” in which it would use its existing broadband network to carry video, phone and Internet services.
