Africa recovery gathers pace, rates seen on hold

JOHANNESBURG -- South Africa's economy grew more than expected in the fourth quarter and the central bank re-affirmed its commitment to low inflation, dimming hopes that interest rates could fall further to support stretched households. Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday the economy grew by 3.2 percent in the fourth quarter on a seasonally adjusted and annualised basis, much stronger than the 2.5 percent consensus in a Reuters poll last week.

The economy was supported by a strong manufacturing sector, the second biggest contributor to GDP, which rose by 10.1 percent.
