Stock index falls 0.3 percent to 9-month low on ‘08 outlook

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s main stock index continued its downward trend for a fifth consecutive day Tuesday, falling 0.3 percent to a new 9-month low on continued worries about next year’s economic outlook.

The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange lost 23.46 points to finish at 7,807.39, its lowest close since March 28. The index has shed 830.94 points, almost 10 percent, over the past five sessions.

Tourism and construction sectors led the fall in Tuesday’s trade. Ambassador Hotel plunged 6.1 percent to NT$26. Farglory Land Development lost 1.9 percent to NT$66.7

Electronics shares bucked the trend.

Hannstar Display surged 6.7 percent to NT$13.55 after LG.Philips LCD said Monday that it will buy 3.42 percent of the company.

DRAM maker Nanya Technology rose 2 percent to NT$17.75.
