Shares rise 0.8% on chips, petrochemicals

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan shares rose Tuesday, led by a strong performance in the integrated chip-design and petrochemical sectors.

The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange gained 74.02 points, or 0.8 percent, to close at 9592.47.

The market recovered from an early fall, prompted by overnight losses on Wall Street.

Big gainers included Asustek Computer, which rose 1.3 percent to NT$93.90 and Richtek Technology, which was the limit up 7 percent at NT$384.

The petrochemical subindex climbed 1.9 percent on the back of stronger oil prices.
