Taiwan wheat tender loses offers on pesticide concerns

The Taiwan Flour Millers Association, which represents 34 grain users, failed to buy U.S. wheat in a tender yesterday as no suppliers submitted offers, the association’s secretary-general Huang Chingho said. “No suppliers put in offers today as they don’t want to take risks before the government makes clear possible revisions to the regulation on pesticide residues,” Huang said by phone today from Taipei.

The association was seeking to import 92,000 metric tons of U.S. No. 1 wheat in two shipments, the first from Sept. 27 to Oct. 11, and the second from Oct. 10 to Oct. 24. The industry group was the importer of the cargoes.

Currently, Taiwan only tolerates six pesticides used in grains, compared with 61 in the U.S., according to Huang. Taiwan rejected less than 9,000 tons of U.S. hard red winter wheat on July 6 because it contained malathion residue.
