Vietnam bear rescue center opens in Vietnam

HANOI -- An animal welfare group on Monday opened the first part of a bear rescue center in Vietnam that aims to help the country end the illegal trade in the animals’ bile for traditional medicine. The Animals Asia Foundation (AAF) opened a facility on the edge of the Tam Dao National Park near Hanoi where up to 100 confiscated bears will eventually be rehabilitated in a mountain forest setting.

Vietnam has outlawed bear farms, but at least 4,000 of the animals remain trapped in cages across the country, partly because there has been nowhere to put those that are saved, said AAF Vietnam director Tuan Bendixsen.
