Thai prime minister sick after eating bad fish in Laos

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thailand’s prime minister stayed home from work with an upset stomach Tuesday after returning from Laos, where he may have invited trouble by sampling local food at an outdoor market, the government spokesman said. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej canceled all his appointments for the day and asked his deputy to head the weekly Cabinet meeting, government spokesman Wichianchote Sukchotrat said.

The prime minister was battling an apparent case of food poisoning he picked up in the Laotian capital on Monday. “The prime minister ate fermented fish at an outdoor market in Vientiane, which might have been contaminated with bacteria,” the spokesman said.
