That number soared in just 10 years to 72 percent in 2008. Singapore has actively promoted marriage among unmarried single graduates as well as non-graduates for more than 20 years. The Social Development Unit (SDU), a government matchmaking organisation, was established in 1984. As of 2006, more than 33,000 SDU members had been married with the unit's help. The Social Development Service (SDS) was set up in 1985 to promote marriages among non-graduates. A year ago, the SDU and the SDS was merged, and on Oct 16, the merged entity was renamed the Social Development Network. The new name “reflects the organisation's aim to forge an extensive network of singles, resources and partners, and to create an environment conducive for singles to meet and forge meaningful relationships”.
