Philippine police say 7 suspects shot dead

Police director Elmo Sarona of Quezon province, northeast of Manila, says an eighth suspect is being treated in a hospital following Monday's bloody encounter in which officers chased and confronted the vehicle's occupants.

He says weapons were recovered from the stolen car, as well as 16 checks worth more than $17,000 that could be from a recent heist.

Monday's case recalled a similar incident two years ago, when police officers gunned down 14 suspects and two bystanders in Manila in what the Commission on Human Rights condemned as arbitrary killings.
