Family of captive RP army officer appeals for freedom

Manila -- The family of an army lieutenant being held captive by communist rebels in the Philippines appealed Thursday to the guerrillas to free the officer.

Lieutenant Vicente Cammayo was seized November 7 after a clash in Compostela Valley province, 930 kilometers south of Manila. Two soldiers were killed in the firefight.

“I am appealing to the people who are now holding my husband to please release him safely and immediately,” Mariel Cammayo said. “His freedom will be their Christmas gift to us.”

Mariel Cammayo, who is six months pregnant, was accompanied by her husband’s mother and elder brother as she sought the Department of Defence’s assistance in securing the officer’s release. She urged Vicente Cammayo’s captors to treat him humanely and expressed confidence that the military and the government were exhausting all means to free her husband.

Communist rebels have confirmed that Vicente Cammayo was being held as a “prisoner of war” and was being investigated for atrocities against the Filipino masses. They have warned that a rescue operation would put his life in danger. Communist rebels in the past have abducted soldiers and police officers, most of whom were freed unharmed after negotiations by local politicians.
