Cambodian deminers die in anti-tank mine explosion

PHNOM PENH--Two Cambodian deminers were killed when an old anti-tank mine they were trying to remove from the ground exploded, police said Sunday.

The blast happened on Saturday in a former Khmer Rouge stronghold in the northwestern district of Samlot, local deputy police chief Nuon Nuth told AFP by telephone.

"They were killed when the landmine exploded while they were digging the ground to remove it," he said.

The two victims were employees of the British demining charity Halo Trust.

Nearly three decades of civil war gripped Cambodia from the 1960s, leaving the poverty-stricken nation as one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.
