Sri Lankans rally against Indian nuke power plantAP COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Sri Lankan environmental activists have protested opposite the Indian embassy in Colombo, demanding a halt to a nuclear power plant being built in southern India.
March 6, 2013, 12:34 am TWN Dozens of protesters from Greens for Change, an environmental protection group, demonstrated Tuesday and shouted slogans and displayed banners that read “Millions of lives are in danger — Stop Kudankulam nuke plant.” One organizer, Prasad Ambalanyaya, said the Russian-built Kudankulam plant poses a threat to lives and the environment in Sri Lanka environment and must be stopped. The first reactor at the plant is finished and it will start generating electricity by the end of April. Russia is building a second unit, but the project has been delayed by protests by anti-nuclear groups and local residents.
