Officials claim police in Nepal detain protesters

Police spokesman Binod Singh says police detained at least seven protesters in Katmandu on Monday and there are reports of protesters attacking at least half dozen vehicles defying the strike. At least two dozen vehicles were burned Sunday, when more than 50 protesters were detained.

Protesters clashed with residents of the Imdol neighborhood in southeastern Katmandu and several people on both sides were injured.

The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities called the three-day strike to demand that states proposed in the new constitution be determined on the basis of ethnic groups.
