Nepal’s PM appoints daughter to Cabinet

KATMANDU, Nepal -- Nepal’s prime minister appointed his daughter to the Cabinet and named seven more ministers and junior ministers on Thursday, the prime minister’s office said in a statement. Prime Minister Girija Koirala appointed his daughter, Sujata Koirala, as a minister without a portfolio. Ministers without a portfolio normally fill in for colleagues who are sick or traveling abroad.

Sujata Koirala’s appointment comes as a surprise because she has been accused of corruption and using her father’s position for her own financial gain, although she denies the allegations and they have never been proven. Formula Mansur, from the prime minister’s Nepali Congress Party, has been appointed Minister for Science and Environment. Koirala also added two junior ministers from his party.
